papier d’arménie.

papier d'armenie

During our trip to France, we popped into the shops at the Louvre to check out the Swatch store and ended up puchasing a book of Papier d’Arménie instead, which wasn’t sold at Swatch. Our friend Olivier introduced these paper deodorizers to us, and actually they came in handy during our stay in Amsterdam (wink, wink).

Produced in Montrouge, France since 1885, Papier d’Arménie is the oldest natural room deodorizer on the market. It became extremely popular in 1888-1889 when Europeans began to place an emphasis on the importance of hygiene. Papier d’Arménie comes in a small 12-sheet paper booklet. Each page has three tear-off strips, and it’s suggested you only burn one strip at a time and 3-4 per week.

Interestingly enough, the ingredient Benzoin, which adds wellness properties to the papers, is also found in Shalimar by Guerlain. So last night I tested their likeness. I lit one of the Papier d’Arménie strips and then smelled my bottle of Shalimar, and sure enough, they have an uncanny similarity.

And don’t worry, if you’re not planning to travel to France anytime soon, you can order Papier d’Arménie online at Don’t you just love the conveniences of the modern world?
